About koseki (family register)

What is Koseki?

Koseki is Japan’s official family registry system administered by the country’s local municipal offices.

The information recorded in the Koseki system includes identity information such as name, address, birth, death, marriage, and divorce.  Koseki Certificates serve as birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage licenses for Japanese citizens living abroad in the U.S. and other countries.

Please tell us how to read the names.

In Japan, people’s names are usually written in kanji characters, and some kanji characters can have more than one pronunciation or reading. For example, 裕子 can be pronounced as either Hiroko or Yuko, and both are common. That is why many types of documents require your name to be written in kanji characters as well as in hiragana or katakana characters. However, unfortunately, this is not the case with Koseki.

If you need Koseki certificates translated, please provide the pronunciation of all the names listed in the certificate, as a translator cannot determine the correct pronunciation without that information provided by the client.
